Leading Hip Surgeon Supports Campaign to Help Students

UW Ronan Treacy

The ¹û¶³´«Ã½’s Foundation Anniversaries Campaign launched just two weeks ago and has already raised £25,000.

Ronan Treacy is a renowned Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in the Midlands. He is celebrated for his pioneering work in hip resurfacing, including co-developing the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) technique.

He has been a Fellow of the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ since 2017 and has now been appointed as an Honorary Vice President of the Anniversaries campaign.

He said: “As a Fellow of the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ of Worcester I’m fortunate to be invited to graduation ceremonies, and it’s noticeable when the students come up and receive their degrees, the wonderment of what they’re experiencing.”

He continued: “You see all their hopes for the future, and what a wonderful achievement they’ve made, and they all come from different backgrounds. Some will have had an easier journey, but some will have had a very difficult journey and it’s important to give them the best possible environment to make it the best possible journey for them.”

Staff at the ¹û¶³´«Ã½ are already training for their Charity Challenge, which involves walking overnight, paddling the River Severn, pulling a tractor and more activities, packed into 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Professor David Green CBE DL, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the ¹û¶³´«Ã½, will devote two weeks of his summer to walking 280km along the coastal Camino Portugues, the historic pilgrim’s path from Porto in Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Mr Treacy’s expertise has been instrumental in the successful hip resurfacing surgery of several high-profile athletes, including tennis champion Andy Murray.

He said: “280 kilometres is the equivalent of walking from Worcester to the Lake District, it’s an achievement I really want to support because I think we’re lucky to have David in Worcester.”

He said: “He has unfathomable enthusiasm, and I’ve always thought he has a real devotion to the wellbeing of the students, both present and future. I’m really keen to support him and his colleagues because I know that this is something close to his heart.”

Professor David Green CBE DL said: “Ronan was one of the very first of the generous donors to support this campaign for student scholarships and hardship funds. It is brilliant to have the support of one of the world’s very best surgeons for this vital campaign.”

He added: “We are all so grateful”.
